“Moderate coffee consumption could play a significant role in reducing cognitive decline which would impact health outcomes and healthcare spending,” University of Coimbra in Portugal's professor Rodrigo Cunha has stated. The combination of caffeine, antioxidants, and polyphenol naturally found in coffee are the likely contributing factors to this scientific discovery. The report cited that caffeine’s role in the reduction of cognitive decline was particularly effective in elderly men. Weight loss is definitely a challenge, but these tips will equip you with the information you need to conquer it. Antioxidants and your coffee.

Coffee is not just caffeine  there are hundreds of other compounds in there as well, many of which science has yet to identify.   Many of these compounds are antioxidants that protect our bodies from oxidation, which involves those nasty free radicals that damage molecules in your body.    Oxidation is said to be one of the mechanisms behind ageing and diseases like cancer and heart disease.   Coffee, are you ready for this, happens to be the biggest source of antioxidants in the Western diet , outranking both  fruits and vegetables put together.   When you’re having your daily cup or cups of coffee, you’re not only getting caffeine but a whole bunch of other beneficial compounds, including powerful antioxidants.  

How much caffeine is too much caffeine?

   Around 400mg of caffeine per day is commonly cited as a safe intake level for healthy adults. That's about 6-7 cups of black tea, 4-5 cups of home brew coffee, 2-3 Starbucks Grande Lattes, 8 cans of Diet Coke, or 5 cans of Red Bull. A typical serving or portion of caffeine is usually an 8 fl oz cup of home brewed coffee, a 20 fl oz diet cola, a 1.5 fl oz espresso shot and an 8.4 fl oz energy drink, all of which are about equal with a range of approximately 70-90mg.   Caffeine is found in the seeds and leaves of more than 60 plants around the world. Coffee beans, tea leaves, cocoa beans, kola nuts, guarana plants, and yerba mate are just a few that contain caffeine.

What do coffee, red wine and chocolate have in common?

  We love red wine for many reasons. We love it for its deep, rich, earthy notes, for its air of sophistication, and, because the last decade of red wine research has a terrible confirmation bias on its hands, for its supposed health benefits. Each year, a handful of studies say red wine is good for heart health.  Chocolate has a similar status as red wine, according to the Mayo Clinic. There could be some heart benefits, such as lower blood pressure, but any consumption should be in moderation. If you want to add chocolate, make it cocoa or dark chocolate. Coffee and Chocolate Part of a healty diet.

  If you’re looking for the healthier versions of chocolate, look for the term ‘dark chocolate. That’s going to be on the label, and then look for a higher percentage.   Other benefits of cocoa powder, the main ingredient of dark chocolate, may include raising good cholesterol levels, the high density lipids or HDL, while lowering bad cholesterol levels, the low density lipids or LDL.   Dark chocolate with at least 70-percent cacao contains fiber and is high in antioxidants. Antioxidants are really important because they help to protect us against certain diseases like cancer, and macular degeneration from aging.   Chocolate can be part of a heart healthy lifestyle but in small portions. You still have to count calories. For example, a serving of miniature Hershey’s Special Dark, five of them, is around 200 calories.    Enjoy, but in moderation.

Children and coffee..... is any amount Okay?

  According to a new study by Boston Medical Center, about 15 % of 2-year-olds drink as much as four ounces of coffee a day .     Between 2% to 3% of the infants  studied were drinking coffee. At two, that number grew to 15 %. drinking on average a little more than an ounce of coffee a day.   “Our results show that many infants and toddlers in Boston – and perhaps in the US – are being given coffee and that this could be associated with cultural practices,” said Dr. Anne Merewood, director of the Breastfeeding Center at BMC and associate professor of pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine.    Official guidelines for children’s coffee consumption is lacking, but there are some alarming potential health effects. Will it be Coffee or Tea? It depends on your age.

 The United States when it comes to coffee consumption is close to the top of the heap second only to  the European Union, Americans are among world’s greatest coffee drinkers, with the average person drinking over 20 gallons of it in 2013. However, research has suggests coffee is starting to lose its lead to Tea.  Tea consumption has grown 20 percent since the turn of the millenium and it’s becoming the first choice for the younger generation of Americans. If people under 30 were asked if they preferred coffee or tea, both proved equally popular, with a tie vote of 42 percent each. A likely explanation for tea’s rise is its perceived  health benefits, with green tea in particular proving a hit.  However with all of the positive health news about coffee the trend may not last.

Coffee and MS.

Consuming four cups of coffee a day linked to reduced risk of MS   The good health news on coffee just keeps coming.  A Swedish study say's that people who did not drink coffee in the year prior to MS symptoms were about 1.5 times more likely to develop MS, compared with those who consumed six or more cups of coffee each day.  The researchers also identified a protective effect against MS among people who consumed large amounts of coffee at 5 and 10 years prior to onset of symptoms.  In a US study, the team also found that people who did not drink coffee in the year prior to symptom onset were approximately 1.5 times more likely to develop MS, compared with those who consumed at least four cups of coffee a day.   The team says the protective effect of coffee consumption against MS may be down to the main ingredient of the beverage - caffeine.

The news about coffee's health benefits just keeps getting better.

  Coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in the U.S., according to researchers at the University of Scranton.   Joe Vinson, Ph.D., lead author of the study, said that "Americans get more of their antioxidants from coffee than any other dietary source. Nothing else comes close." The authors of the study emphasize moderation, stating that only one or two cups a day appear to be beneficial. Coffee may help prevent Parkinson's disease  Researchers in the U.S. carried out a study that assessed the link between coffee consumption and Parkinson's disease risk. The authors of the study concluded that "higher coffee and caffeine intake is associated with a significantly lower incidence of Parkinson's disease". In addition, caffeine in coffee may help control movement in people suffering from Parkinson's, according to a study conducted at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI MUHC). Coffee is good for you...coffee is bad for you....

  You can drink up to 5 cups of coffee a day, or up to 400 milligrams of caffeine, without detrimental effects, according to a new report that will help shape the official government dietary guidelines.    This is the first time caffeine has been mentioned in the advisory report, which is submitted by a panel of experts to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services every five years.    The advisory committee determined moderate coffee consumption was not associated with health risks, including but not limited to cardiovascular disease and cancer. In fact, the committee noted that there's evidence coffee has some health benefits, including reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Green Coffee and Garnicia Cambogia have been all over the Internet and magazines as miracle weight loss supplements. "Some of the studies show it could be helpful for weight loss, blood pressure management  but we have all heard this type of stuff in the past. Concern over these items not fulfilling their promises has been highlighted nationally.   Dr. Oz was even called in before Congress to testify about less than truth full advertising for diet products featured on his program. Dr. Oz did not back down from his endorsement of weight loss remedies, such as green coffee extract.
