UK looking to have a disposal fee on that paper coffee cup.

We have all seen the disposal fee on the old tires we have replace and the used oil when we have an oil change. Now at least in Great Britain it's that paper cup that is up next for a disposal fee.    Prof Wouter Poortinga said some 2.5 billion disposable cups are used annually.  The findings are due to be submitted to a   UK government inquiry into waste . "Our results show that, on average, the use of reusable coffee cups could be increased by up to 12.5% with a combination of measures," a disposal fee in other words. Prof Poortinga said.   "People are far more sensitive to losses than to gains when making decisions - so if we really want to change a customer's behavior then a charge on a disposable cup is more likely to be effective."  Every one wants a clean environment. The cost of the disposal of your one use cup is already in the price you just payed for that $4.99 Grande from Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts. This additional fee is ...

Is Coffee on the way of the dinosaurs?

Reports estimate that wild coffee could go extinct by 2080. Coffee shortages can make it harder to get good coffee and that hurts the livelihoods of  millions coffee farmers around the globe.   Environmental research groups are concerned about future access to coffee. Advisors for corporate giants like Starbucks and Lavazza express agreement.   "We have a cloud hovering over our head. It’s dramatically serious," Mario Cerutti, Green Coffee and Corporate Relations Partner at Lavazza, said at a hospitality conference in Italy in 2015. "Climate change can have a significant adverse effect in the short term," he said. "It's no longer about the future; it's the present."   But a warming world and extreme weather, are making it harder to grow coffee in these regions, according to some reports. Temperature and heavy rain have helped a fungus like Coffee Leaf Rust migrate through Central America and into South America, de...

N.C Policeman takes over 2 hours to seek treatment for coffee spill burn.

You just spilled a very hot cup of coffee on your lap. What do you do?  Well it depends. If your are a North Carolina police officer you have your wife drive you home to take pictures of the effected part of your body.  Then you drive back to the police station to get you truck and then after a time laps of over 2 hours go to an urgent care center.  Sounds reasonable. When will the pictures the police officer took  be on the net?

Starbucks, Ethos and the Californian drought.

California is on the brink of blowing away in the wind due to the water shortage, bringing on a huge onslaught regulations being passed that restrict personal and business water use.  Ethos, Starbucks bottled water brand has it's water plant in Merced California but recovers its water from nearby Baxter California. Both of witch are in the extreme drought areas of the state.   Ethos does not have to pay for the groundwater it pumps. It is a private source and does not come from any municipal source.  Some California's are getting a little irritated at possibly getting a hefty fine for flushing the toilet one to many times. Only to watch millions of bottles of Californian water being bottled and ship all over the country.

iPhone Starbucks coffee app what's it do?

After experimenting with having two separate apps, Starbucks finally unified them into a single, got to have app. This app allows you to manage your Starbucks card, pay for your purchases, track your rewards, find a store, see a menu, buy a gift, apply for a job, and more!    If you're a Starbucks fan, you need to have this app. In theory you can go ahead and dump those other two; this one replaces them entirely. However, be aware that some users are complaining that their information from the mobile card app was lost in the switch, so be sure you've backed everything up first.   The Starbucks® app for iPhone® is the quickest, easiest way to pay for your coffee—no wallet necessary. The app is completely redesigned with an improved interface, a more personal dashboard experience, digital tipping and other great features, including easy access to our loyalty program, My Starbucks Rewards®.

Starbuck to do delivery in NYC and Seattle this summer.

Starbucks fans in New York City will soon be able to have their iced lattes delivered right to their door or office. It has been said that Starbucks plans to start a delivery service in Seattle and New York City later this year. The Seattle service will cover homes and offices, but only office buildings will be served in New York, starting with the Empire State Building. Orders will have to be made online only. There will be no minimum purchase required, but a delivery fee will apply. Starbucks says it expects the average delivery time to be 30 minutes from placing the order. So is a cup of Starbucks coffee worth the cost of the coffee, delivery fee, tax, and tip? And you thought K cups were expensive.

Starbucks in the hot seat over spilled hot coffee.

Yet one more law suit over spilled hot coffee. Matthew Kohr a Raleigh North Carolina police officer received a "free" cup of coffee at the Starbucks on Peace Street in January 2012, only to have the lid popped off and the cup folded in on itself, according to the lawsuit.    Kohr said he poured cold water on the burn, but the pain only intensified. Kohr claims his injuries aggravated his Crohn's disease, and resulted in surgery to remove a portion of his intestine.   The incident, according to the lawsuit, also caused Kohr's wife, Melanie, the loss of a "source of emotional support, her social companion and her intimate partner." Kohr is seeking compensation, including damages, attorney fees and medical costs, totaling more than $10,000. The coffee maker also mentioned that the coffee was given to Kohr free of charge and that the officer "was negligent in his use of the product."

Clear Styrofoam cups for your coffee?

Is a clear Styrofoam cup in your future? Most likely at some point. The standard Styrofoam cup comes in all colors and art work know to man except one, clear. Now I am not talking clear plastic but true Styrofoam.  "Caution contents HOT" has real meaning when served in a standard plastic cup clear or other wise.   Plastic cups have little no insulation property's and that paper sleeve is little help. Why clear you ask? Your coffee will taste better, really. Test have given us this insight into the human mind. Trendy cup have been hitting the news lately like the KFC's Cookie cup. Cups with seed in them. Bio degradable cups and so on and so on. It is only a mater of time before a clear Styrofoam cup comes to market. With consumers willing to pay high dollar for  K cups. A new trendy clear Styrofoam cup will be an instant hit. But will they get the feel right?

How much caffeine is too much caffeine?

Around 400mg of caffeine per day is commonly cited as a safe intake level for healthy adults. That's about 6-7 cups of black tea, 4-5 cups of home brew coffee, 2-3 Starbucks Grande Lattes, 8 cans of Diet Coke, or 5 cans of Red Bull. A typical serving or portion of caffeine is usually an 8 fl oz cup of home brewed coffee, a 20 fl oz diet cola, a 1.5 fl oz espresso shot and an 8.4 fl oz energy drink, all of which are about equal with a range of approximately 70-90mg.   Caffeine is found in the seeds and leaves of more than 60 plants around the world. Coffee beans, tea leaves, cocoa beans, kola nuts, guarana plants, and yerba mate are just a few that contain caffeine.

Coffee is good for you...coffee is bad for you....

You can drink up to 5 cups of coffee a day, or up to 400 milligrams of caffeine, without detrimental effects, according to a new report that will help shape the official government dietary guidelines.    This is the first time caffeine has been mentioned in the advisory report, which is submitted by a panel of experts to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services every five years.    The advisory committee determined moderate coffee consumption was not associated with health risks, including but not limited to cardiovascular disease and cancer. In fact, the committee noted that there's evidence coffee has some health benefits, including reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. There's also some evidence caffeine offers protection against Parkinson's disease, the committee wrote.    Still, pregnant women and children should limit their caffeine consumption, the...

The Hario Skerton ceramic burr coffee mill

The Hario Skerton is a ceramic burr mill that's hand operated, portable, and affordable. It'll set you back about $28.00 It holds plenty of coffee for your morning brew (about 100g at a time, so if you're making a lot it may take a couple of grinding sessions), offers a nice, consistent grind and a comfortable grip while you're using it, and it's easy to clean out when you're finished. It's lightweight, and even if you don't use it with the included coffee container, it fits a standard mason jar, so you can attach it to one of those and grind to your heart's content. The bottom is rubberized so it doesn't slide around your countertops while you grind, either.

Iced coffee.... Why so expensive?

Is it just me or is the price of a iced coffee at a coffee shop seem a little high?  Well the buzz is that not only with the up tick in bean prices partly to blame but it's the ice, the special cup, the amount of coffee used in iced coffee. Cry me a river! A typical 16 oz iced coffee is over $2.75 in my location. If you cant turn a profit at that price on something that is over 90% water. Your overhead is out of control. Oh! it takes a lot of ice they say and ice is expensive to make or buy.  The cup is not a typical paper cup and is more expensive.  It takes almost twice as much coffee to make iced coffee. Bean prices are going up. Sounds like big oil talking to me. Or perhaps big coffee.
